Sanjay Pasari | What is Photo bashing in Digital Art? Does it count in Art?

Photobashing is a method used by concept designers and matte painters to expedite the process of generating photo-realistic artwork. It is commonly employed in film production and game design studios where quality requirements are high and rapid turnarounds are critical.

Photobashing is similar to photo compositing in that it includes mixing images and occasionally 3D models to produce a new piece of artwork. However, because Photobashing relies on photographic textures and objects, some critics see it as cheating and not true art.

However, in addition to being commercially viable, Photobashing also calls for a high level of expertise and attention to detail, not to mention being an expert user of image-processing programs like Photoshop and the newest challenger, Affinity Photo.

Like any other form of digital or traditional art, combining images with different color attributes, different lighting setups, and subtle changes in perspective is a skill that is in high demand and that takes years to truly master. To produce work that is as convincing as possible, this skill must be learned and continually practiced.

Where to use Photobashing?

1: Landscape & Environmental designing

Photobashing is pretty much essential nowadays when creating landscapes that either don't exist or would be impossible or downright dangerous to film.

Publishers of video games, photographers, and digital artists who need to swiftly alter the sky in a picture or fast add realistic mountains to a scene may find the necessary skills to be of great help.

Values, a method of deciding how bright and dark particular components of your fictitious landscape should be, and perspective, which may bring the possible spectator into the picture, are two abilities that are vital to effective landscape design.

2: Character Designing

Designing a new character from scratch, whether for a video game, film, or comic book, can be a very difficult task. Any method that might expedite this process, like photobashing, can be a very useful tool when dealing with this laborious process.

The best place to start when looking for inspiration and ideas for your next character design is with solid reference material. But it would also save a ton of time to think about how these photos can be useful for your Photobashing approach later on in the creative process.
